Just finished working the new moon with its low tides in Pine Island Sound. Although the low water made access to my favorite grass flats challenging, the spotted sea trout bite was exceptional in and around the mixed sand and grass on both the outgoing and incoming tides. As always, clousers were the fly of choice and with the light winds a six-weight was plenty. Too, with a seven-foot medium fast action spinning rod, a soft plastic paddle tail rigged on a quarter ounce jig head was tough to beat. We did see some tailing redfish on the very end of the outgoing when the water was at its lowest, but we weren’t able to get any to eat. Most likely, by the time we saw them we were just too close and they felt the presence of the skiff.
