Needless to say, it has been really hot. As a result, I’ve been working close to home and fishing early. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to be off the water by 10:00 a.m.  At first light, it’s not unusual to find rolling tarpon and some days they can be more cooperative than others. They have a way of showing once or twice and disappearing. Considering how hot it is, i’ve been surprised how decent the spotted sea trout bite has been. There have been some good pompano out on the grass flats mixed in with the trout. Redfish and snook can be found along some of the outer mangrove shorelines as the water there is just a bit cooler and more oxygenated than it is deeper in the backcountry. I have been encouraged by the numbers of small snook that i’ve been seeing and hope it’s a positive sign for our fisheries future.
