Most likely, we’ll continue hunting tarpon this month. It’s hot and subsequently it’ll limit the time we have on the water. Fishing early is key while it’s both calm and cooler. The upper harbor is the place to be and we’ll load out of either laishley Marina or Ponce Park in Punta Gorda. Tarpon have been rolling in the deeper holes and even up towards the mouth of the Myakka River. These are mostly larger adult fish that push triple digit in size. As a result, a larger twelve-weight is the way to go. The smaller juvenile tarpon we were fishing in the Peace River that are our favorite to target have been pushed out from all the rain and we’ve found a few groups to the south down along the east side just outside some mangrove shorelines. In addition, the snook bite has been decent up against the mangroves.
