As December winds down it looks like we’re getting ready for our next good cold front. One things for sure; the snook aren’t going to be happy. This is the time of year I like targeting the fish of winter, our spotted sea trout. They’re cooperative and they really do attack the fly. Moreover, on the mixed sand and grass flats that I like to work, especially on low water, no fly out fishes the deep water clouser. However, I tie them with smaller eyes so I really don’t consider them a deep water pattern. For the most part, what makes this such a deadly presentation is the drop in between strips. Basically, it’s the same principle that makes a soft plastic on a jig head so effective. When a predator sees the prey getting away by diving to the bottom, they do attack it. Lastly, if I had to pick a color, it’s hard to beat chartreuse.
