I’ve been putting in some time in Pine Island Sound and have been fortunate in that the weather has been great as the winds have been on the light side. Typically, they’re always lightest first thing in the morning which has been a bonus as that’s when we’ve been having some low negative tides. This combination of low water and light winds definitely provides an opportunity to see some tailing redfish. They can be challenging as they’re very skittish in the clear low environment but it’s an incredible experience. Moreover, the beautiful habitat that is Pine Island Sound is an experience all it’s own. When a redfish has its head buried in the mixed sand and grass rooting for some food; it probably provides one of the best chances to get close enough for a good shot. For the most part, if they’re cruising or milling about the grass flat they’re very difficult to sneak up on. For sure, getting a chance to sight fish in this situation is one of the apex’s of our sport. If the weather cooperates, this scenario could keep me busy through February. No doubt, we’re going to get the right tides: I’m just hoping the wind helps out.
