November 2017 Fishing Report

For the most part, this month marks the beginning of a winter pattern. The combination of cyclical low tides combined with strong breezes associated with northern fronts change everything. In addition to dropping the temperature, the predominant northerly winds also push water out of the harbor making low tides even lower. This is the time small shallow draft skiffs have an advantage as many areas become just too difficult to navigate safely. Even with the shallower drafting skiffs, caution should be foremost as its way too easy to damage your boat as well as the shallow grass flats. In addition [...]

This month continues the transition that began last month as we push slowly towards cooler weather. Although it’s still extremely hot during the day, I can feel the difference just before dawn. Before low tides and consistent north winds push our way, it’s time to take advantage of the best redfish angling of the year as the spawn peaks and fish are schooled up throughout the area. We all know how time flies and like most months this one will be over before we know it. For this reason, I’ll try and put in as much time as possible looking [...]

It’s the beginning of a transitional period around the harbor with some of our favorite inshore species on the move providing some of the best opportunities of the year. As fall approaches, the next two months have good potential and this is just the beginning. As for redfish, as the days begin to get a bit shorter and the water temperature cools down they begin their spawning period. As a result, the fish group or “school” up. They can show up in just about any of the bays and sounds that surround the harbor as well as the flats on [...]

Being the height of summer, this month is a good time to get out before the sun gets up. Redfish and snook fish best during the cooler morning period. Typically, the water temperature is so warm on the flats I like fishing around outer bar systems adjacent to deeper cuts leading to the open harbor. Just like last month, I’ll still take a look around creek systems during rainy periods on high early morning outgoing tides; but overall, the cooler water adjacent to the open harbor is more consistent for the short available window before it gets too hot. That’s [...]

Understandably, this month begins a period where I prefer fishing early. The cooler morning water temperatures present the best opportunity to look for redfish and snook outside the cover of mangroves where they’ll spend most of the day as soon as the water temperatures rise with the sun. Overall, rainfall amounts factored in with tide help determine where I’ll look on any given day. For instance, if we’re getting consistent afternoon soakers, I like looking around tidal creek areas on an early morning outgoing tide. The east side of the harbor anywhere south of Ponce Park in Punta Gorda and [...]

After months of working low tides around creeks and adjacent shorelines, it’s time to go tarpon fishing.  Now, that doesn’t mean it’s not a great month to hunt redfish and snook.  In fact, because of all the options, May is one of my favorite months to be on the water.  As for tarpon, they typically begin showing up first in the upper harbor between the West Wall and Punta Gorda. These are resident fish that come out of the rivers and generally eat pretty well.  A free lined live bait or big piece of cut mullet work well. Moreover, If [...]
